On Tuesday I woke at 5:30am and went to bed at the next day at 5:30am. Huh? So what day it it? I was at Macy's doing another Valentine day promo for Ralph Lauren. I didn't take any pictures because basically it looked exactly like last year. Remember? No? See here. Anyway, it was grueling. Instead of having the day to condition and water pick 2000 roses, a hiccup in delivery snagged the plans and they arrived at midnight at the store and we stayed until 5am getting it done. Have you ever seen some crazy floral thingamagig and thought what crazy person did that? Hi...yeah, over here, its me. What can I say, it pays. In the midst all this I created these sweet little posies for the Thistle and Clover pop-up shop. Much more my speed. Flowers you kill me, you seduce me and you feed me. Literally.

For the Home

Last week I had the opportunity to design flowers for a client's home. This has been a goal of mine for some time and I was thrilled to get the chance. Now we all love wedding flowers with their pomp and glory but as a designer I'm not gonna lie - it's one thing to create a little masterpiece but to then face the task of having to recreate it - oh, say 20 times...well, it can become a bit draining to say the least. It was a nice change of pace to think about placement, lighting and interior design. I especially yearned to design cleaner and more modern flowers. What I took away from the experience was when designing interior flowers, the vase consideration is just if not more important than the flower choice. What a treat to wake to a nice arrangement by your bedside. I do hope I get more opportunities like this in the future. I was in heaven.

We did a photo shoot here in the studio last week and I wanted to give you a sneak peak. My main motivation is to debut my little ceramic flower (I slipped some into the tablescape). I've been churning them out while trying not to get too precious. Some have already exploded in the kiln. Oops. But then like any art form, we practice and practice and practice some more. Clay is teaching me patience. Speaking of practice and patience. I have all but abandoned mine, that is meditating. I find it incredible hard to wake with weak sunlight and sit quietly. The dark makes me sleep. And if I must get up before dark, it's a groggy dash to throw on whatever and seek strong coffee. But it does seem my littlest pheasant has cultivated a nice practice of sitting still. I love this picture (caught while I was cleaning). Talk soon. xo

Is there anything more astonishingly glorious than a poppy? A most miraculous flower. For all it's intoxicating qualities, associations with internal sleep and remembrance...I find it one of the happiest flowers of all. But then maybe that's the point. After blowing them open you will find your lips go numb. Enjoy the view.

Hello gang. How are you? Things are heating up around here. I am super excited about this fun event I am involved with on February 8th at Thistle and Colver. If you are in town please RSVP and join us. I have a big install going on again (yay!) the night before so my eyes may be popping out of my skull by the time the party starts....but it's all good. On another note my first ceramics came out of the kilm this week! Still need to think about them but I can't lie I'm pretty excited about it. Hello folks. How was your New Year? We rang it in with friends, popcorn and bubbly. It was perfection. Since then I've been drudging along on boring but necessary business stuff. I do have to tell you that I've found a new passion. Not to replace flowers (bite your tongue!) but it's all I think of lately. I finally signed up for a ceramics class. I am terrible but I am obsessed. And then people keep telling me to tweet. Now that's just insanity. But then the truth is I can't because I am too busy freakin' pinning! There are too many distractions in the world.

So folks, the year comes to close....It's been a busy and creative year. I am so very grateful to all my lovely 2011 couples. A hearty thank you to you all for having me be apart of your magical day. And to my awesome, rockin' don't stoppin' flower making crew. Thank you Jenni, Sara, Eliza, Parnell, Heather, Rachel and Niki. And to the lady who has the cleanest van in the market and hauls me all over town and back. Thank you Monica (and Papi). I've loved working with Adrienne and Tory and look forward to more collaborations in 2012. Thank you! Since we are a dual faith household our Littlest Pheasant has already been indulged up to her ears in presents, sweets, parties and celebrations all week. And the fat man has not even shown up yet. Oy! After the wrapping paper settles, we plan on doing NOTHING. Maybe some movies in the middle of the day, napping and more eating. Then we will be visiting dear friends up in the hills of Western Mass for New Years Eve. I will slow the blogging for a bit but will be back rejuvenated for a slamming 2012 weddings season. I'm booking fast and really excited about working at some new venues. A whole new crop of blushing brides and gallant grooms await.

Just back from a really great site visit with a 2012 bride. Afterwards, I found myself near Union Square so I strolled through the Farmer's Market. The sun was blazing high in the sky and the air smelled of pine and hot cider. Look at my goodies! There was an unbelievable bounty for mid December. Hot house tomatoes! So I was finally up at the market this week and I have to say I was underwhelmed. But then Tuesday is a pretty dismal day to shop. I did gather some pretties to play with. I will post soon. Hello friends. I've been down and out for a couple of days with a head cold. Two days in bed, sleeping, knitting and watching a Gone with the Wind marathon (God, I love that movie). I am very grateful to wonderful friends who gave me a helping hand by walking Ruby to school and watching her afterwards. I am so sad to learn the news today that floral design visionary Jane Packer has passed away. I was fortunate enough to have worked for the company when they first opened in New York. The experience changed the course of my life. Not only did I meet other talented designers that I still call friends, but it allowed me to peek inside the workings of a successful design business and hone valuable flower making chops. Most importantly it gave me the confidence to take my own jobs which eventually led to...well, this phase of life.

I only met Jane in person once but I remember clearly the impression she made. It was of an lively, funny, smart woman with a clear vision. She was the only florist I knew of at the time that used black tissue. She had custom made black square bags with long cords to place the flowers in - no boxes, no cellophane, no raffia, no colored ribbon. It was very chic, very modern. She said to me that she wanted the gifting of a Jane Packer arrangement to be the floral equivalent of getting a box from Tiffany's. I have one bracelet from Tiffany's that I got on my high school graduation. Unfortunately I don't remember the bracelet making that much of an impact on me but I sure remember that blue box. Brilliant.

I remember 6am calls at the Ritz Carlton Hotel doing what seemed like 100s of bud vases for the room service trays and making massive branch arrangements in crystal urns that I feared would fall on my head. I learned how they got water out of those heavy urns (suck in on an inserted rubber hose and quickly deposit into a bucket unless you get a mouthful...easier than it sounds). I perfected my spiral. I folded lots of aspidistra leaves. I saw how it's done.

Thank you Jane and your incredible team for so much inspiration throughout the years. Your new book is a must have.You will be missed but the beauty you brought to the world will live on.

One Man's Trash another Woman's Treasure

I scored two amazing metal garden chairs the other day. My best street find ever. Incredible what folks will toss in New York. The color - a lovely robin egg blue has inspired my window display. I'm thinking of keeping that color scheme (light blues, faded greens and whites) for the holidays, with some sparkle thrown in here and there (of course!).

Heavenly scented bouquet of gardenia, freesia, garden snow roses, tibet roses, mini callas with a little trail of black netting for some drama. The direction was to keep it clean and refined so no greens. I could have buried my nose in it all day.

Early November to non-floral workers means highautumn. You know, harvest time...the colors, the smells, the bounty.Thanksgiving is approaching and it's one of my favorite holidays. But to usflower industry folks the season is actually ending. Dahlias, local hydrangea,cockscomb, sedum, these lovelies are already winding down at the market. The wintergreensand bulb flowers are appearing. Next weeks wedding will actually have peonies (yay!). So good-bye autumn flowers. We love you and see you next year.

Hello. It's me. Sorry, I've been ignoring my little o' blog.Been laying low, picking apples, trick or treating, cooking and baking andsleeping. But then the wedding march really never ends. Already meeting bridesand grooms for 2012 and have been busy writing up proposals. One more weddingand season number three will end. I find myself asking lots of questions thistime of year. Mostly about the direction of my business and more importantly mycreative life.

I hada great chat over coffee with an old college friend this morning. We'verecently reconnected after running into each other at the flower market. Shetoo is an artist and florist. It's obvious that many fine artists findthemselves working in flowers. It can be a natural fit. But running aprofitable business as well achieving creative fulfillment is a challenge...andI suspect it always will be no matter what your medium is. I feel the need tobranch out. Be back soon.

So the big news around my neck of the woods has nothing to do with flowers or littlest pheasant's latest adventure but rather it concerns the man in my life. Adam has just installed this incredible public art work in Times Square, called Performer. You can read a review and see a video on Architects Newspaper. If you are in the area you should stop by. Step into the spotlight and witness a virtual 500 person audience clapping and cheering just for you! It's quite a moral booster and hilarious to watch unsuspecting pedestrians walk into the light. Adam has had this idea for almost 20 years, a true testament to perseverance. Other news is he just became the artist in residence for the city of Seattle. Which means we'll be making some trips out to the great Pacific Northwest! I'm hoping you can give me advice on the best places to visit and enjoy. More to come.

So I am hitting you again with a wedding from the archives today. This time it's an early spring wedding (peonies! lilacs!) It was held at the Bronxville Women's Club, an absolutely charming historic venue founded in 1925 in Bronxville, NY. Photographed beautifully by Levi Stolove. I remember how the whole room was flooded with light and a warm breeze. So lovely to look back on past work...puts the fact that I am exhausted from a busy year in perspective. Flowers are great. What is it about the changing of the seasons that bring on surreal dreams? My dreams have been all over the place. You? Last night I dreamt that when I arrived at the flower market and it was hidden among all these holiday ornament stores. I was looking at little plastic trees wondering were all the fresh flowers were. Hate flower anxiety dreams!

I was feeling a little overwhelmed this morning...putting on and taking off too many hats. So I stopped, took a walk and returned to my desk with a cup of tea. ahhhh....breathe. Burned my finger with a hot glue gun making twine wrapped table numbers for a wedding this weekend. Ouch....but they sure look cute.

Been meaning to tell you that a old worn stump that I "foraged" from the side of the BQE and sat guard in front of the studio has been stolen. wtf? It had to be lifted when we were working because you can not access it when our front gate is down. Thinking someone must have turned into a side table??

Autumn on the Hudson

Lynhurst Castle in Tarrytown. When we pulled up I thought "oh man! Ruby has to see this place! It's a real live castle". What a stunning venue. With my best flower girl by my side we had a great time installing and making everything look just right. It was a dream. Then as we waited for the ceremony to end to dismantle the chuppah, we took a little stroll around the property. Funny thing...according to the info plaques, the property was considered too flashy for it's day. Kinda the McMansion of the early 19th century. You wonder if these big new fabricated homes will ever be considered our historic treasures in the future?? Doubt it... Anyway back to the wedding. It was a celebration of autumn, all woodsy and wild.

What a stupendous weekend. Two lovely events in full autumnal glory running a great doable pace.

First up was at a really lovely restaurant in Park Slope Brooklyn called Scottidito Osteria Toscana. I'm always on the look out for local spots that have a pretty private room for intimate parties. This place fits the bill. The owner was a really great guy and the staff seemed completely on top of it. It was a small intimate wedding...simple masons on the table with a knock out bouquet. The bride specifically requested this yellow orchid in her bouquet. I was nervous at first on how I was gonna work it in but in the end it was a perfect fit!

I am considering opening a little holiday shop for November and December - here in my storefront studio space. Wedding work trails off and I thought well why not. Or am I nuts? Should I just chill out, take care of myself and my family? But Cobble Hill Ballet has opened it's new studio a couple of doors down and there are lots and lots mommies around....hmmm. Little potted trees, succulent wreaths, some vintage knick knacks. Will you come?

I walked into the market this morning and everything looked soooo good. I sometimes struggle with fall... things look a little too crispy and dingy to me, too halloweeny. But today I felt it. What seemed drab now looked rich. The bright yellows have softened to a sunset glow. And I just can not get enough of those deep plum colors. So I'm back and I'm pumped for this weekend. This past week I have developed a weird sleep pattern and it's seriously bumming me out. Don't bother trying to reach me in the evenings because by 9pm I am out. Seriously dead to the world. I can barely keep my eyes open as I read my girl a bedtime story. I spend no time with my guy. Being tired and being a florist (or being a working anything really) is nothing new. What's weird is the heaviness I feel when the sleep takes over, as if I'm under a spell. The worst part is I often wake in the middle of the night unable to return to sleep. Hence my 3am blog post. I've spent some time and money on ways to straighten out my imbalances but I have abandoned them lately. I'm feeling like a big o' sluggish crabby failure right about now. Maybe it's the change in seasons. Maybe it's the late hour. Not sure. But I need to bounce back. Life feels heavy and I like light. Light and happy are what inspire me.

This was an experiment. It was for a photo shoot. The direction that was given was simply "Great Expectations"

Yoga and Flowers

Labor day weekend we headed up the Hudson for a wedding at the Bedford Post Inn, Richard Gere and Cary Lowell's intimate and perfectly appointed small inn, restaurant and yoga studio smack in the middle of rolling hills and horse farms. I mean this is the land of Martha and Ralph (you know who I'm talking about). I was in love with the decor...sort of a refined farmhouse vibe with subtle Asian influences. As soon as things calm down I am most definitely heading back there for a meal and yoga class. The day was warm but thankfully the rain held off. The next morning I felt like I'd been doing cardio and weight training for 10 hours straight. There sure is a lot of schlepping in this job.

Morning. Just dropped the littlest pheasant off at her first day of Kindergarten. It was my husband and I who got all emotional, not her...of course. I had this incredible rush of emotion, thinking... ahhhh, I want another baby! Probably not the best time to decide whether or not have another child on your only child's first day of school. But then again I signed up for a yoga class in the MIDDLE OF THE DAY! The expanse of free time I am gaining is staggering to me.

Entering the 4th Decade

Hello. Anyone still there? I've been meaning to share some images from a very special trip my husband and I took back in mid August. This year was a landmark birthday for me. I turned 40 (!?). And to celebrate we managed to throw a dance party at the studio during a 4 wedding weekend (I know nuts). After that my hero swept me away for a night to the Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, NY. It was perfect in every way. I am now a walking advertisement for this place. It just about has everything one could want in a vacation. Let me show you.

This sprawling historic resort was built between 1880 and 1910 by two Quaker brothers. It combines wholesome family activities like fresh baked cookies, tea and boardgames at 4pm in the main lodge...(hello!) with modern amenities like a superb world class spa (added in 2005)- which of course I stayed at for a whole afternoon. The property is apart of a massive nature preserve with many hiking trails and caves you can explore.

Once you tire of swimming in the lake, sitting in the dozens of wooden hand built structures, boating, hiking, fishing, you can always go wander the formal gardens that include a hedge maze and stone tower.

The in-house florist has full reign of a massive cutting garden as well as a stocked greenhouse. Hmmm....dream job?

Now, let's say you want something to do other than commune with nature. Well than spend some time poking around the Museum Barn uncovering Victorian era farm treasures.

The spa was the highlight. No cameras allowed. So I keep returning to my memory of lounging in a soft white robe gazing out on a wall of green leaves.

And what words of wisdom do I have now that I've turned 40? Not much more than - believe you can do it and work hard to make it happen (and move the hair out of your eyes when taking a photo).

I am so very grateful and truly relieved to find myself in a very positive place. I was not always sure I'd feel that way when entering this decade. In fact I was a down right confused mess in my twenties and most of thirties. Best part about turning 40? When you are in your thirties no one says "Wow you look great for 38"....but once you hit the big 4.0. you start to hear "damn, you look good for 40!"

Mother nature gave me a batch of new gray hairs this weekend as she blew up the east coast. Mandatory evacuations, suspension of the subway system as well as bridge and tunnel closures had us all in knots. I literally broke down and cried. A glamorous red and black wedding planned for a venue in Long Island City had to be canceled due to the weather. Thankfully we successfully delivered to the hotel and it turned into a lovely brunch instead. Unfortunately things were moving so fast I was not able to take a few photos (bad!!).

I did however get a chance to snap some photos of one of my most beloved wedding of the year. I worked extremely hard on this wedding design. Months of planning for the nicest bride with the sweetest folks. Sometimes I actually feel like my clients are family. These were these people. The wedding had to be scaled down but the couple did wed under a lace canopy with jasmine and passion vine above. I was left with some extra centerpieces and there was no way I could throw them out. My littlest pheasant became my deliver girl and we donated them to our local hospital. They were much appreciated and it felt good to pass it on.

I hope my east coast friends were all safe and did not suffer too much damage.

Herbs, herbs and more herbs. Includes rosemary, basil, oregano and two kinds of mint. It was quite delicious. I have some quick images from the set up but they are still on my camera. Will down load soon but I've been running mad this week. In fact if I don't leave right now to set up a wedding I just might fall asleep on my keyboard. A wholesaler at the market told me I looked tired the other morning. I think that's code for you look like crap. Men should know better to say that to a women. Ahh! So sorry I disappeared for a bit. I've been super busy as of lately with lots of flower work and photo shoots etc...The days are flying by! It's hard to believe it's already August. August is my birthday month. And it's a big one this year. gulp.

I must tell you that when I handed the bride her bouquet last weekend she got all misty eyed and started to cry! Which made me cry! When I saw her later that evening she was still welling up with tears when she caught sight of me. It's amazing what flowers will do to a person. Sure, I stress about the business but I tell you in the end, I do love wedding flowers.

Summer has me thinking about art making, craft making, home making, food making..... And where to go with this business (?). At times I feel I am not pushing hard enough, being savvy and hard nosed enough in business. But then most days I feel pretty full to the max with all I am doing. It's hard to imagine that this fall my littlest pheasant will be in school full time. It's a bittersweet feeling. While I am savouring the time it will afford me, I am kinda sad to see her baby years go. Is this the constant state that parents exist in?

The call was for a modern simple Chuppah. I already had the bases (square metal containers with PVC pipes set in place with concrete). I went to Home Depot in Brooklyn - which I might add is the black hole of confusion and toxicity, to purchase more PVC pipes. I slipped them in the bamboo and then over the PVC pipes in the base and viola - it worked. We then filled it with wheat grass. Worked perfectly for a ceremony at the W Hotel which uses wheat grass in their decor. The canopy was all hand sewn and embroidered by the Mother of the Bride. It was stunning. I'm pushing her to start a side business in Chuppah canopies!

It's hot out there. How about something cool? Like an all hand wired orchid bouquet with astilbe. See those little light green round flowers? I thought it was some mini carnation ....nope. A Japanese-grown spray rose. The Japanese are really pulling out some outrageous flowers lately.

We kept the Bridemaid's bouquets simple and in budget. Green hydrangea and a couple of hosta leaves. It was all very chic.

Hello there. Back from a long weekend in the Catskills. First full weekend off in a long time. It felt good to be away. We swam in fresh lakes, ran around bare foot on green grass and found a pony for the littlest one to ride. I am however a little bummed that I easily packed on 4lbs in 2 days from indulging in bread, sweets and wine. I was down 8lbs after a couple of weeks of clean eating and exercising. Damn. I have a goal and this time I am serious about it. But most importantly no more hateful body talk. I am not passing that down to my daughter. Back on track tomorrow.

While I upload some pretty vistas from our trip here is a favorite recent bouquet.

I should add the bride who carried this bouquet had the prettiest frilliest cocktail length dress I've ever seen. It worked perfectly with the ruffled look of the hydrangea and scabiosa.

Here are some quick snaps from a wedding we did in Bronxville NY a couple week ago. Inside this lovely big airy room we created a gardener's delight. Lots of herbs, lilacs, peonies, garden roses, allium, tweedia and lavender. Like I said, I do adore late spring early summer flowers. Till next year, you beauties! I let a friend down and I've become consumed with my inconsideration. I thought it would be best to give them some room after suffering a devastating loss before reaching out. But I was wrong and they've been hurt by my silence. I'm so bad at reacting to trauma. I shrink to the back ground. It's not because I'm callous or uncaring. In fact I think it is more because I worry I will fall apart. Another friend I know is always perfectly poised to respond with grace to tragedy. There she stands unafraid with outstretched arms, an ear to lend, knowing the right thing to say. I yearn to be more like her. I am making this a goal of mine. We are human and have many frailties. I've sincerely apologized and can only hope years of friendship have formed a strong enough bond to weather this storm.

The Challenge

Whoa, it's been quite a stretch since I last posted. Time is flying. Are you enjoying your summer? I hope so. I truly am. A bunch of stuff has been going on over here. I feel as though I have so much to update you on. I often think of things to write about when I push the littlest pheasant on the swing, cook dinner or run errands but then when I sit down to post it all escapes me. I know it included something to do with a sliced finger (my first floral injury), my thrown back (and miraculous recovery), route 9A (damn you 9A!), and urban foraging (I'll get to that). In the meantime, here is one of the weddings we did this past weekend.

Full disclosure this arrangement has been totally "Mac Gyvered"; as in propped up and put together with all sorts of found objects. Now the old Denise would be beating herself up for not remembering to bring large waterpicks and oasis. However, now the new mindful Denise goes with the flow and fashions water picks out of Poland Spring bottles and wraps stems in wet paper towels. Om. It worked perfectly.

The centerpieces were a challenge but I love a challenge. The design direction called for modern and spa-inspired style. Yet (of course) I wanted them to be lush and pretty and appropriate for a wedding. I was asked to incorporate succulents and billy balls but the rest was up to me. Everything hinged on the right branchy green. As soon as I spotted this green leafy branch at Dutch Flower Line (no one knew what it was?!) I knew I had my base. I'd never seen flowering variegated pittosporum before. Since it was in the right color scheme I grabbed that. My big dilemma was should I mix peonies and orchids?? Ah, a sin to some, I gather. But I felt it needed a round focal flower and more white. Truth be told I was nervous coming back from the market with my raw materials. But I kept things somewhat grouped together so it was not a big mixed up mess.

In the end I was thankfully very satisfied with my choices and how it came together.

A New Friend Who is Really an Old Friend

Funny thing. An old childhood friend finds me on Facebook. Realizes I do flowers. Asks if I can send an arrangement to a mutual friend who has just had a baby girl. Sure, I say - I remember Karen we sat next to each other in 2nd grade. She was the smartest girl I knew and never made a mistake on her spelling tests. Ever. I take down the details. Turns out she lives directly across the street from me! How weird is that? I walk in and we are reunited. Hugs all around including her mother who remembers me and my mom. Karen has another daughter who is 4. I stare down at this little tow headed child and I see Karen as a child. We are 7 years old again.

We made some very pretty wedding flowers this weekend. Including a massive pink peony arrangement for my little bunny. 5 years old people! 5! This is a major marker in life. Princesses are waning and there is talk of rock stars. When you ask her what her favorite color is she would say without hesitation "sparkly pink". Now she adds "...and a little shiny black". Meanwhile this single pink peony had us swooning. Just amazing.

In between deliveries, Jenni and I had some time to kill. After hitting up John Derian's SALE! (I scored!!) We stumbled upon this lovely public garden. It was the nicest coolest greenest little oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the East Village.

Been meaning to tell you how my mediation classes are going. Basically I am all calm and chill in the beginning of the week. Mindfully moving throughout my day. However, but weeks end I'm downing 2 coffees by 9am and racing through all I have to do. No I exaggerate...not really (well the coffee yes). I have to say each weekend wedding so far has been really enjoyable and moving at a normal pace. This is good.

True Blue

We were awash in blues and purples on Saturday. Things were moving really fast and I was unfortunately unable to get a shot of the green leafy and white crab apple chuppah. I only had time to shoot some flowers in the studio before we left.

The palest yellow peonies you've ever seen picked up the yellow in the irises. The day went from sunny and warm to cool and cloudy. I know the weather was stressful at times but nonetheless there was this moment when I looked around the grounds of the Botanical Gardens and quite frankly I was dumbstruck by how peaceful and beautiful it was. A gray sky and so much lush green made any bit of color just pop.

So I want to tell you something. I've embarked on something completely new and different. Every Monday evening I sit in silence with a small group of strangers. We talk about learning to respond rather than react to life. I zone out, I twitch, I watch as my thoughts bounce around my mind uncontrollably, I come back to my breath, I zone out again. I realize just how much my back aches. It's hopeful to mediate and it's frustrating. I'm kinda excited.

So what do you give a bunch of French fashionistas who are dining privately at THE best restaurant in New York? Yes, that James Beard award winning restaurant. You give them gorgeous peonies and then when you are done you give them more. Good thing their brand is pink.

My pet peeve. Don't tell me you can't get me blown out deep pink azalea. Don't tell me it's done. Because the Greek guys across the avenue have a ton of it. Why the confusion? Everyone has a different story.

Fellow flower lovers, so sorry I have been MIA. My head has been seeking inspiration and gearing up for a busy spring wedding season. How have you been? Are you still with me here on this journey?

Here's what I have been up to:

First, a HUGE thank you goes out to Brooklyn Bride. I am beyond thrilled to be named the winner of the Modern Tablescape Design Challenge. YAY! I was honored to be included among such talented fellow competitors.

Last week I made the mistake of "popping" into Strand Bookstore. And by mistake I mean, I did not have a lot of time to waste. Yet precious hours passed by as I strolled the aisles, leafing through their vast collection. At one point I had in my arms around $300 worth of books. I was absolutely certain I needed every single one. But I came to my senses and whittled it down to a couple, vowing to return soon.

If you are not familiar with Strand, let me tell you it is a masterpiece of a place. Opened in 1927, it is still a family owned business with a collection of over 2 million used and new books and occupies 55,000 square feet of space. You can literally spend all day there if you are a book lover like me.

It turned out that I desperately needed a day like that. I wandering, wondering, discovering day. I use to have those days all the time...before baby, business and household....blah, blah, blah.

Some of my finds included a book on Redon. (10 bucks!). I was never a big Redon fan in school. I always considered his work too surreal for my taste. But then I got hooked on the flower pastels and from there I am admiring his color palette. Particularly the use of primary red and blue, which I always find difficult to combine.

I also grabbed "Flowers from the Royal Gardens of Kew", an exhibition catalogue published in 1988. It has lovely botanical prints I am considering tearing out and framing...eh, maybe. We are trying to teach Ruby that cutting books is a big no-no but then college is a big yes-yes.

I have been meaning to tell you about this lovely little flower shop I stumbled upon when I was visiting the Bay Area. It's called Clementine (how cute is that!) and located in Oakland on College Ave. Natalie the owner was the nicest as she let me snap some quick pics of her light filled shop. Love meeting fellow flower people!

Among fresh flowers, you can pick up stoneware and mercury glass, wonderful weathered wire pieces, sweet smelling candles and pretty paper goods. Check out their flicker site to see more goodies and make sure you stop in if you are in town. It made me yearn to expand my business and open my own retail shop...and then I will really go nuts.

Sunday we did a wedding at Galapagos Art Space down in Dumbo, Brooklyn. The flowers brought the only real color to the dark and dramatic space. I am loving this punchy color combo of pink and orange. I just can't seem to get enough of it. I wanted something modern yet not to stark - they still had to have movement and feel relaxed. I was so happy with the results.Enjoy!

I actually had a hard time giving up these Sarah Bernhardt peonies. They were heavenly.

Fiat Lux means "Let there be Light" in Latin. I read the phrase is often used for its metaphorical meaning of dispelling ignorance. I like to think it's also about finding clarity of thought. I perceive my business expanding/morphing as I see my many interests merging. And I am relinquishing this self imposed pressure to solve it right away. I recognize now it's a life's work. It's my own journey. I guess I'm maturing. What a relief.

Hello. I am back from the Bay Area. Despite the rain we had a lovely time. I have so many new ideas for work!! I had my eye peering through a camera, hands in clay, head in a book and thoughts in the clouds. In fact I was dreaming about art which has not happened in ages. Plus the ache between my shoulder blades has gone away. Miracle of miracles! I am waaay behind in updating you all on some exciting press news....but I'll get that soon enough. Instead here is a smattering of things that have been running through my head.

The most incredible live "painting" at the Renzo Piano redesigned California Academy of Sciences. Truly breathtaking. The whole museum is outstanding. A must visit, especially with children.

What is it about craspedia or rather billy balls (which personally sound rather crass to me....I'm just saying) that make the perfect little boutonnieres? And speaking of boutonnieres, no matter how many times I type this word I misspell it on the first try. I think I am going to call them buttonholes, like the British and Australians do from now on.

Loved this frilly little bouquet from last weekend. It had the most delicious hellebore and the craziest striped green parrot tulip I've ever seen. Climb up in there and take a look.

So happy to share one of my favorite weddings from last year. New Leaf Cafe is such a NYC gem. This wedding had such a distinctive vintage inspired, muted and romantic mood. The photography by A Couple of Cameras really captured it beautifully. Also, pulling off a red lip is seriously difficult. Courtney kills it, done to perfection. 40's Charmer

It's been a tough winter, no question about that. Add the stress of our apartment move, the tasks of running a business, responsibilities of being a mother and just the general daily grind of life well it's no surprise I've had bouts of the blues...."Calgon Take Me Away" moments - anyone remember that commerical? Do they even sell Calgon anymore? Anyway, thankfully when I was buying for this wedding, I walked into the market and it hit me - the scent, the colors, the shapes. And I was flooded with happiness. I thought to myself "Yes, you love this, remember? Don't feel insecure, Don't worry so much, you are in your element. It's your medium and it will sustain you." Sounds silly but Thank God. I yearned for a boost. Crazy I need to remind myself of this from time to time. Do you guys have similar experiences?

And now for this vase. I love it. Creates the most charming 40's inspired goodness. It was so light and airy. So many lovelies in there - Austin roses, snaps, larkspur, green and pink french tulips, white double tulips, pale yellow and white rununculos, daffs, glads, paperwhites, bay leaf, and white jasmine.

The lovely Tory Williams stopped by on Friday to take a sneak peek behind the scenes as we prepared for a wedding. It felt like spring in here, with paperwhites, muscari, tulips, garden roses, hyacinth and snapdragons filling the room. Here are some of her amazing images. So back in January I had high hopes to make some art. Truth be told - I didn't get very far. Packing, moving, unpacking, meeting, and proposals took over. So I turned to my sketch book for company. I've kept a sketch book of some kind since college. But now it has morphed into more of an inspiration book rather than traditional sketch book. After I gave birth and eventually went back to the desk job I watched my creative internal life slow and shrink. My husband sensed my frustration (bless him) and recommended I get a big book, not worry and just paste whatever inspires me into it. Clippings of home decor, flowers, gardens and art mix with my doodles and collages. One day when the days become longer and my brain has more room to think it will be a treasure trove (I hope). Here I share with you some of it's pages. You should start one today.
